Bale Mountains
Cloud-forest serenity — alpine meadows, endemic wildlife, and the best habitat for the Ethiopian wolf.
Bale Mountains National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most biodiverse regions, with altitude ranging from 1,500 to over 4,000 meters across grasslands, cloud forests, and the Afro-alpine Sanetti Plateau.
The park is the most important habitat for the Ethiopian wolf — Africa’s rarest carnivore — as well as mountain nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, and over 260 bird species. The African Bird Club ranks Bale among the top birding sites on the continent.
Trek through the Mararo Valley, visit Habera Waterfall, and explore the Harenna Forest. Trekking here is less demanding than the Simien Mountains while offering equally rewarding wildlife encounters.
