Blue Nile Falls

Tis Issat — “The Smoking Water” — where the Blue Nile plunges over a cliff near Bahir Dar and Lake Tana.

Prepare to be captivated by the majestic Blue Nile Falls, locally known as Tis Abay — “Smoke of the Nile.” Located approximately 30 km southeast of Bahir Dar near Lake Tana, these powerful waterfalls are one of Ethiopia’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

After the rainy season (June–September) the Blue Nile swells to full glory, cascading over a 45-meter cliff in a spectacular display of mist and thunder. Even in drier months the falls remain an inspiring sight and a perfect complement to Lake Tana’s island monasteries.

Combine a visit to the falls with Bahir Dar, Gondar, and the Northern Historic Route for a complete Ethiopian adventure.
